By 2011, The Mercedes Benz M Class has reached legend status, and that is in large part to its bigger horsepower numbers coming from SUV’s like the 2011 ML550. However, for 2011, Mercedes decided to keep things simple in regards to their 2011 Mercedes ML 550. Sometimes less is more, and that is the mantra MB worked with while prepping the ML 550 for 2011. Subtle bumper changes have been incorporated in the redesign to help keep cool air flow where it needs to be, namely across the radiator and front brake ducts. Additionally, newer, slightly longer headlights were added to the mix to mesh nicely with the new bumper and grill.
Now its not always fun driving a three row sports utility vehicle any distance. While some opt for the larger brother in the Benz family, namely the GL-Class, the Mercedes ML550 has fit the bill for quite a few. The Mercedes 550 has quite a draw on the masses, and with a few more subtle exterior changes to let buyers and passengers know they are in something special, have chosen to restyle the front bumper, grill, and fascia while equipping the newer styled lights in a smokey hue. Additionally,a 4 spoke leather wrapped steering wheel will be attached in front of integrated paddle shifter, helping you get the most out of your shifts.
Speaking of getting the most out of the shifts, what exactly is there to motivate and move? Well, how does 382 rear wheel horsepower sound? For the 2011 Mercedes GL550, Mercedes incorporated a 5.5 liter horsepower sourced from the previous generation M Class. 382 horsepower make peak power around 5,500 RPM, and torque comes on line at an even lower RPM, putting down an estimated 391 lb ft of torque thru the 7 speed automatic transmission and back to the a fore mentioned paddle shifters if you are in sport mode. Otherwise you can just push the gear selector from Park to Drive, turn the wheel, and go.
While the standard trim list on the lower level ML-Class SUV’s can get the price tag up quickly, the 2011 Mercedes GL550 has taken care of most of that for you. Eschewing the standard 17 inch rolling stock in favor of 18 inch cast aluminum alloy wheels, and include power front seats, leather upholstery, seating, and steering wheel cover, dual zone climate control, an auto dimming rear view mirror, and rain sensing wipers.
Using a newer control center – Much akin to Mercedes Benz COMAND unit – drivers are able to interact easily with the Harmon/Kardon stereo with or without satellite radio, Navigation and music storage, and iPod input jack built in. With the newly optional 610 W 12 speaker Harmon Kardon Logic7 equipped, you’ll be playing with the control center a lot.
Coming in with an MSRP of $57,590 you’ll really have to ask yourself…. Do I need almost 400 horsepower in a 5 seat SUV? We’re saying yes.
